One of the most important roles of a profession body is to ensure that the voice of its profession is heard where decisions are actually made.
While individual practitioners can make a difference locally, influencing national policy requires credibility, expertise and international standing. It requires organisations that governments will listen to.
That is exactly what Homeopathy International (HINT) has been doing.
When the German Government proposed legislation that would prevent statutory health insurers from continuing to offer homeopathy and anthroposophic medicine as voluntary healthcare benefits, HINT prepared and submitted a comprehensive formal response to the German Bundestag Health Committee.
This was not a petition.
It was not a social media campaign.
It was a carefully researched policy submission presented through the formal parliamentary process to one of Europe’s most influential healthcare legislatures.
We are pleased to report that the Bundestag Health Committee has now circulated HINT’s submission to members of the German Government as part of its consideration of the legislation.
That means that the case put forward by HINT is now directly before those responsible for shaping Germany’s future healthcare policy.

Speaking with Authority
Healthcare policy must never be determined by headlines or ideology alone.
It should be informed by balanced evidence, practical experience and an understanding of how proposed legislation affects both patients and healthcare systems.
HINT’s submission was designed to provide precisely that perspective.
Rather than making emotional arguments, we presented reasoned, evidence-informed observations on the likely consequences of the proposed legislation and encouraged policymakers to consider the wider implications before restricting patient choice.
Among the key points raised were:
- The financial savings are minimal. The projected reduction in healthcare expenditure is extremely small when compared with the overall German statutory healthcare budget, raising questions about whether the proposal achieves any meaningful economic benefit.
- Patient choice deserves protection. Millions of German citizens choose homeopathy as part of their healthcare. Until now, statutory insurers have been free to offer these services voluntarily in response to patient demand.
- Healthcare should remain pluralistic. Germany has long been recognised internationally for supporting medical diversity and patient-centred care. Removing insurers’ discretion to offer complementary medicine represents a significant policy shift.
- Integrative healthcare has an important role. Across Europe, healthcare systems increasingly recognise the value of prevention, patient engagement and holistic approaches alongside conventional medicine.
- Scientific discussion should remain open. HINT urged policymakers to distinguish between healthy scientific debate and the legislative exclusion of an entire therapeutic discipline.
- Public confidence matters. Restricting healthcare options risks reducing confidence in statutory healthcare and may encourage some patients to seek alternatives outside the reputable public system.
Our submission concludes by asking the Committee to reconsider the proposed prohibition, preserve insurer discretion, protect patient choice and continue engaging with both German and international integrative healthcare organisations before final decisions are made.
